What a Glacier Bay Alaska cruise really is

A Glacier Bay Alaska cruise is a voyage that spends one whole day inside a national park. Cruise ships do not dock anywhere in the park; they usually spend 9 to 10 hours in the bay, with a stop at a major tidewater glacier. Park rangers come aboard to narrate the day and staff an information desk.

Not every Alaska cruise goes there. The park lets no more than two cruise ships enter on any day, and it authorizes six lines: Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Norwegian Cruise Line, Seabourn, Cunard and Viking. The park itself notes that many Alaska cruise offerings do not visit Glacier Bay at all.

This site books a 9-day package from Vancouver that does. You start with FlyOver Canada and Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, board on day 2, cruise the Inside Passage, call at Juneau on day 5, spend day 6 in Glacier Bay National Park and day 7 in Ketchikan, and sail back to Vancouver, from $2,047.

Why this trip

A coast of islands.
A park of glaciers.
A day you plan for.

Glacier Bay sits at the northern end of the Inside Passage, about 60 miles west of Juneau, and only a few ships may enter each day. This 9-day trip from Vancouver bundles hotel nights, FlyOver Canada and an Alaska cruise with Glacier Bay on day 6, from $2,047. It is a new listing without reviews, and it leaves the ship to your booking.

In between · why this bay

Why Glacier Bay is worth a day of the voyage

Glacier Bay is young country. About 250 years ago a single tidewater glacier filled the whole bay; by 1750 it had begun to retreat, and it has since pulled back 60 miles to the head of the bay. The park calls it the most dramatic documented large-scale glacial retreat in the world.

What remains is still enormous. The park has 62 named glaciers, seven of them active tidewater glaciers that calve icebergs into the sea. Mount Fairweather, its tallest peak, rises to 15,300 feet above the upper bay. Glacier Bay is also part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site with Wrangell-St. Elias, Kluane and Tatshenshini-Alsek, one of the largest protected areas in the world.

From a ship, you see that history in order. The lower bay is green forest; further north the trees thin, the slopes turn to rock and gravel, and the ice comes into view. By the time the ship stops in front of Margerie Glacier, you have sailed through centuries of change in a single morning.

In between · a new listing

A new trip with no reviews yet, and what it states

Our featured trip only recently appeared on GetYourGuide, and nobody has reviewed it so far. That is no mark against it, though it leaves you relying on what the listing itself states rather than on other travelers' stories. Read the listing carefully, ask questions before you book, and keep your confirmation for the details it leaves open.

The listing is clear about the route and the main inclusions: accommodation in Vancouver, a cruise cabin in the category you select, meals on board according to your cruise package, FlyOver Canada, a visit to Capilano Suspension Bridge Park and transfers where your confirmation lists them. Flights, travel insurance and visa or entry fees are not included.

It is also clear about what it does not say. The listing names neither the cruise line nor the ship, and the operator is Soulvia journeys LLC rather than a cruise company. Ask which ship and cabin types your dates use. Whatever the ship, its day in Glacier Bay follows the park's rules: rangers come aboard, and the route and the glacier stop are set by the park.

In between · the season

The season for a cruise into the park

The park's main visitor season runs from late May to early September, with July as the peak. It counts May and September as the shoulder season for cruise ships, and June, July and August as its prime season. Each part of that window has its own character, and the dates you pick shape what you see.

Early in the season, May and June each see 9 days with 2.5 mm of rain or more on average at Gustavus, near the park entrance, and mid-June brings 18.3 hours of daylight. Humpback whale numbers rise in mid-June and peak in July and August. July is the warmest month, with an average high of 17.8 °C.

Late in the season the bay turns wetter and quieter. September averages 14 days with 2.5 mm of rain or more at Gustavus. It also opens Johns Hopkins Inlet to cruise ships on 1 September, though only a few travel to the face of the glacier. Our guide to the best month walks through the trade-offs in detail.

In between · ice and weather

Clouds, calving and a day you cannot script

Glacier Bay keeps its own schedule. Calving happens in sun or rain, sometimes not at all during a one-hour visit and sometimes several times within it; nobody can predict it. The ship stops in front of a tidewater glacier for about an hour. Watch, listen and let the ice decide.

The weather is just as independent. In an average year Southeast Alaska sees about 4 sunny days per month. Summer highs in the bay run between 10 and 15 °C. Grey skies are normal, and they bring out the deep blue of the ice; a clear day is a gift rather than a promise.

The ice itself is changing. Margerie Glacier, at the end of the cruise ships' course, is rapidly thinning and receding, and there is 11 percent less glacial ice in Glacier Bay than in the 1950s. Rangers on board explain those changes as you watch, and they are part of what makes the day memorable.

Hold your place now, pay later

Cruise trips are planned months ahead, and plans change. This listing lets you secure a place and settle the bill later, and withdrawing is free of charge until 24 hours before you start. That gives you time to arrange flights to Vancouver and travel insurance, which the price does not include.

Use the time well. Ask the seller which ship and cabin types your dates use, what the cabin category you choose includes, and how meals on board work under your package. Check your passport and any visa or entry rules for Canada and the United States; the listing makes travelers responsible for their own entry requirements.

If you are still comparing, look at the alternatives on this page. The day boat from Bartlett Cove is a way into the park without a cruise, and the Juneau outings fit into a port day. The comparison table shows the price, duration and cancellation terms side by side.

In between · photos at the ice

Taking pictures of glaciers that do not fit the frame

Glaciers are hard to photograph because they are so big. Margerie Glacier stands about 200 feet above the water and is 0.85 miles wide. On a screen it can look like a white wall of no particular size. Include the ship's rail, an iceberg or a small boat in the frame, and the scale suddenly makes sense.

Expose for the ice, not the sky. A phone will happily turn blue ice into flat white; tap on the brightest part of the glacier to keep the color. For wildlife, a longer lens or good binoculars help: cruise passengers regularly spot brown bears, bald eagles, harbor seals, humpback whales, mountain goats and puffins.

Video catches calving better than photos. Start recording when you hear the ice crack, keep the camera braced on the rail, and let it run. Then let it hang from your wrist for a while. The park says the best side of the ship is outside, especially near the glaciers, and that is where the memories are made.

2ships a day

The park's daily limit

No more than two cruise ships may enter Glacier Bay on any day.

Only six lines are authorized, and every big ship that comes in for the day takes the same course up the West Arm to Margerie Glacier.

In between · what to wear

Dressing for a cold deck in summer

Pack for a cold, wet day even in July. The park suggests waterproof boots, rain gear, a hat, gloves and wool or pile layers or a warm coat. The listing also asks you to bring warm and weather-appropriate clothing, comfortable shoes, a camera and sunscreen, along with your passport or ID card.

Layers work best. A thin base, a warm middle layer and a windproof, waterproof shell let you adjust as you move between warm lounges and the open deck. Air coming off the ice feels much colder than the temperature suggests, and you will stand still for long stretches while the ship waits at the glacier.

Small extras make a big difference. Bring gloves that work with a phone screen, a warm hat, a scarf or buff and sunglasses for the glare off water and ice. Binoculars earn their space in the bag; they turn specks on the shore into bears, goats and eagles.

In between · ship and cabin

The ship, the cabin and what the listing leaves open

The listing describes a selected cruise cabin and an Alaska cruise according to the selected itinerary, without naming the ship. That is worth clarifying. Ask before you book which line and ship your dates use, which cabin categories are available and what each one costs.

Any cruise ship in Glacier Bay, Alaska, sails under the park's rules. The park authorizes six cruise lines, and every big ship follows a similar course from Icy Strait up the West Arm into Tarr Inlet to Margerie Glacier. Whatever ship you board, the glacier day itself will look much the same.

Where you stand on board matters more than your cabin. A balcony is pleasant for the long hours up the bay; the open decks give the widest view during the glacier stop. Our guide to balconies and the best side of the ship covers how to plan the day around that hour.

In between · port days

Juneau and Ketchikan on the way

The cruise calls at Juneau on day 5 and Ketchikan on day 7, and optional shore excursions in both ports are not included in the price. That leaves you free to choose. In Juneau, a 3-hour whale watching cruise starts from $108 and is rated 4.79 from 579 reviews.

From Juneau you can also see glaciers from the air. A seaplane flight over five glaciers lasts 40 minutes and starts from $383. A 5-hour tour combining Mendenhall Glacier and whale watching starts from $199, and its listing guarantees your money back if no whale shows up.

Ketchikan sits at the southern end of the Alaska part of the route. A floatplane trip over Misty Fjords National Monument lasts 2 hours and starts from $389, in a small group of up to 6. Book port outings separately, and check that their times fit the hours your ship spends in port.

In between · who it suits

Is this the right trip for you? The fine print

It suits travelers who want a ready-made package: hotel nights in Vancouver, two sights in the city and an Alaska cruise with Glacier Bay on its route, all in one booking. An Alaska Inside Passage cruise to Glacier Bay is one of the classic ways to see the coast, and this trip follows that classic shape from start to finish.

Families do well on the park day too: rangers run Junior Ranger activities on board. The listing is not suitable for people with mobility impairments, heart problems or people prone to seasickness, and it lists pets, smoking, alcohol and drugs as not allowed.

The caveats are simple. Nobody has reviewed the listing yet, it does not name the ship, and the ship and cabin details come from your booking rather than from the listing page. If those matter to you, ask first. If you are traveling without a cruise, the park's day boat from Bartlett Cove is the other way to stand in front of the ice.
